A former teacher, Shelley is very comfortable in the classroom. She focuses her school and library presentations on the value of perseverance, describing the pitfalls she encountered on her path to becoming a published author. She discusses where ideas come from using examples from her books and describes how these ideas changed and developed during the writing process. Numerous literary devices are explored, depending on the age of the audience. Shelley also reads from some of her many rejection letters – the part of the presentation that students seem to like most.
“Everyone raved about her presentations!” Booksplash Festival
“During the hour-long presentation, Shelley exuded warmth, humour, and charm as she related her early years struggling to get her first book published. In addition, the students learned about Shelley’s background ideas and inspiration for all her books. At the end of her presentation our English Department Head said, “That was the best English class of the year.” It was a unique, memorable experience.” Lori Zuk, Handsworth Secondary School
“Thanks so much for a wonderfully, warm, frank and inspiring talk. We all loved it.” Cathy Stonehouse
